Bank Profitablity Performance in EU: Cross-country analysis
This paper examines cross-country differences in selected aspects of bank profitability performance in the European Union in 2009. A key finding is that the overall pattern is heavily influenced by the outcomes in the three Baltic States and Ireland. If these countries are excluded from the sample, there is no evidence of a statistically significant relationship between the changes in return on equity and GDP growth and the extent of loan quality deterioration and increase in impairment charges in different countries. --author-supplied description
