Abstract
An extended abstract accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 24th annual Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics in conjunction with presentation of the work as a poster at the conference at the University of Nagoya in Japan on July 30, 2012. This work answers a long-oustanding question about non-emptiness for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties by providing a closed, combinatorial formula in terms of paths in a finite directed graph. In addition, this work unearths a mysterious connection between affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and Schubert calculus on complex flag varieties. The full article is still in preparation.
