Abstract
Offers a critique of various assumptions about the nature of love in Islamic mysticism, about the issue of Islamic mysticism's interactions with Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions, and about the role of love within Arabic and Islamic poetry. The essay uses controversies over translations of early Arabic mystical texts to focus these issues and put them into play with one another. --author-supplied description
