Abstract

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) offer an ideal platform for engaging students in bioorganic chemistry. Hands-on, iterative learning in bioorganic chemistry helps students build conceptual bridges between organic chemistry and biology, while fostering innovation. Moreover, integrating bioorganic chemistry research into the undergraduate curriculum prepares students to make meaningful contributions to society through careers in medicine, research, public health, and environmental science. In this Chapter we present two distinct CUREs in bioorganic chemistry taught at Haverford College by two professors each with distinct perspectives and experiences. The first is a biochemistry CURE focused on exploring the molecular ground rules that direct the structure and function of biosynthetic proteins. The second is a chemical biology CURE focused on the rational design and synthesis of small molecules intended for covalent bioconjugation strategies. In both cases, the CUREs are structured to meet learning goals associated with bioorganic chemistry while supporting students in developing inter- and intra-personal skills.
