Abstract
In this significant paper, submitted in 2006 and published in 2006, we showed that the progress of a chemical reaction can be predicted from measurements of the stretching of fluid elements, which is essential to mixing. This work was highlighted in the News and Discovery section of Physics Today. Physical Review Letters provides 'coverage of major advances in all aspects of physics and of developments with significant consequences across subdisciplines.' Letters are required to be of broad interest. -- author-supplied description
