Hank Glassman, Haverford College

Abstract

Translation of a sixteenth-century Japanese version of the story of the Buddha's disciple Mokuren, or Maudgalyayana, who saved his mother from hell, establishing the annual summer festival for saving ancestors that is the central event in the ritual calendar in all of Buddhist East Asia. This version of the legend recasts him as a Japanese prince. --author-supplied description
