Abstract
This chapter was an invited contribution to the Oxford Handbook of Cultural Sociology edited by Jeffrey Alexander, Ron Jacobs, and Philip Smith. Therein, I provide an overview of the field by showing how each of the established approaches employs a different definition of music (i.e., as a text, as an object, and a resource in social action.) In conclusion, I demonstrate the promise of an emerging perspective that understands music as a mode of social performance. --author-supplied description
